A recent study reveals that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such treatments should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
